Life after work: Be Inspired by Tony Newman - Alzheimers Australia
One of the most satisfying things about providing high quality, personal financial advice is helping people follow their passions beyond work. Vice-President Alzheimer's Australia, Tony Newman, shares his story to inspire others to get on the road to health, wealth and happiness sooner.
Tony Newman’s life changed forever when he lost his wife to breast cancer when she was just 47 and he was 49. Until then he’d enjoyed a successful career in leadership roles at Mitsubishi with a knack for bringing people together and mentoring up and coming talent. Following his wife's death and all too aware of how short life could be, Tony resolved to retire early and pursue other passions.
When the opportunity arose to take a voluntary redundancy as Mitsubishi wound up its SA manufacturing operations in 2008, Tony saw his chance. As part of the process he was introduced to Richard Dahl at FMD and the rest as they say, is history. In the years since, Tony has managed to satisfy the needs of both head and heart.
As Chairman of Alzheimer’s SA and Vice President of Alzheimer’s Australia he uses his corporate leadership skills, while his role on the board of the South Australian Jockey Club allows him to be involved in his beloved horse-racing as an industry advocate and racehorse owner. Richard has been his adviser every step of the way. As Tony puts it, if you pick a trainer you have to let them train the horse. "FMD are the experts. They manage my investment portfolio and because they’re so good at what they do, I have the freedom to do what I want.”
Fighting for an Alzheimer’s cure and raising awareness about the disease is satisfying because it touches so many lives, including Tony’s. “My Dad died of Dementia in the nineties when there was such a stigma associated with it Mum wouldn’t even tell her brothers and sisters. We’ve come a long way since then thanks to people like Ita Buttrose and Graeme Samuel. Tony says dementia is not a normal part of ageing. While there are no guarantees, there are five simple steps everyone can take to reduce the risk of Dementia – look after your heart, be psychically active, mentally challenge your brain, follow a healthy diet and enjoy social activity.
